For some time QPPD had been hearing about younger people, including
children, living in nursing homes. For many of these people the nursing
home was the place they were expected to live out their lives. It was
clear that there were many negative impacts for individuals in these
situations.
At the QPPD AGM in October 2000 the issue of younger people in aged
care was set as a priority for our work. QPPD President, Fiona Connolly,
reminded us that we needed to recognise the vulnerability of people
with disability who are left to the discretion of the system without
the benefit of a tenacious parent.
We also recognised that this was an issue that other groups, in particular
the unfunded Brain Injury Action Group, had either been working on or
had an interest in. When the opportunity to be part of an Alliance was
presented we joined with enthusiasm. Working in collaboration with others requires having a clear vision
and common understanding of the issues. The major task of the Alliance
has been to develop a common agreement
