Beliefs underpinning our work
At QPPD we share the belief that people with disability are entitled to aspire to the best possible life, just like any of us.
This means we want our family members and all people with disability to be included and enjoy the same rights as other citizens when it comes to schools, activities, work, housing, support – indeed all areas of community life.
What we know is that people with disability do not always have the same opportunities as others and may need support to promote their needs and interests.
Many people with disability are supported by parents, family members and friends while others may have no-one to support them and are vulnerable. Advocacy organisations can support people with disability and families to work towards getting a better life for their family members.
Parents and families have a lifelong commitment to their family member with disability and want the best for them. This can be a hard road to travel for many parents. Being able to work through the difficult times and share experiences with other families helps families become stronger. At QPPD we believe that families play a crucial role in promoting a better life for their sons and daughters. We believe that by being better informed, parents and families will be better placed to develop their capacity to be authentic advocates for people with disability and understand and respond to the broader issues.
