Advocating for the right of people with disability to be valued and contributing members of their community

QPPD was founded in 1981, International Year of Disabled People, by a small voluntary group of energetic families of people with disability.  Undertaking systems advocacy to advocate on issues such as family support and respite, education, quality lifestyles for adults and guardianship, these families were committed to seeing their sons and daughters included in their local community.

Thirty years on we continue to do systems advocacy for many of the same issues: going to the local school, belonging in your school and community, living in a home of your own and being safe and well supported. In short, an inclusive life in which people with disability are valued and contributing members of their community.

We work with a wide network of families and allies across Queensland to provide family advocacy as well as systems advocacy. Our regional advocacy work is directed to mentoring and developing families and allies to do advocacy within their region. While QPPD does not engage in individual advocacy, we are closely allied with other advocacy groups across Australia engaging in other forms of advocacy. Our family advocacy focus is to nurture and strengthen advocacy on behalf of families.
