QPPD GOALS & OBJECTIVES
- Staying in touch with the grass roots so that QPPD has an excellent understanding of the concerns of people with disabilities and families throughout Queensland and of their struggles.
- Family advocacy so that QPPD creates a climate which supports families and allies to be effective advocates for people with disabilities.
- Systems advocacy so that QPPD influences political, bureaucratic, social and service systems about important issues in the lives of people with disabilities and their families.
- General advocacy development so that QPPD contributes to the development, maintenance and safeguarding of strong independent advocacy in Queensland and Australia.
- Management and accountability so that QPPD operates a viable and accountable organisation which reflects in its operations the values, beliefs and principles underpinning its mission.
QPPD sets its Goals and Objectives at the Annual General Meeting. The process for this is as follows:
Prioritisation
Systemic priorities are determined and committed to at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) by QPPD membership. For an issue to get to the point of nomination it is filtered through a number of critical questions which assists decision making, for example:
- Does this priority fit with the mission and goals of QPPD?
- Is QPPD the appropriate/right/best/only group to do this?
- Can the organisation support and resource this initiative?
- Where does this rate within the priorities we already undertake?
- Does this use the resources of QPPD efficiently?
- What do we expect the outcomes might be for
- QPPD as a whole
- People with disabilities
- Families
Networks/Projects
Subsequent to prioritisation of issues, Networks/ Projects are established to develop and implement the priorities. These Network/Project groups are made up of parents who have a particular interest in the issue and volunteer their time to address the issue from a systemic perspective. Network/Project groups are supported and resourced by the organisation.
For this year 2009, the priorities for the focus of our advocacy work has been on Transition for young people with disability from school to either “earning or learning” (see our Transition page (click here) and Education (see our Education page (click here).
Other
The Board of Management may from time-to-time have brought to its attention or identify an emerging systemic issue. It is at the discretion of the Board of Management if and how organisational resources will be directed toward delivering an advocacy response.
