News Feed... On Wednesday 6th August, the Transition Sub-Committee hosted an event to launch our Booklet called Launch into Life: planning great futures for young people with disability. It was held at the State Library in the Terrace Room. Cold and windy conditions did not deter the audience as they were riveted to the words of the guest speakers: Jenni Pidgeon, parent of young adult with disability, Valmae Rose, State Manager National Disability Services Queensland (NDS), Lisa Bridle, parent of young person with disability and Professor John Elkins. The event was well attended, but more importantly, people were excited to receive the information contained in the folders which were handed out to everyone and which included our Position Statement, Issues and Recommendations Paper and the Handy Hints Booklet for parents of students with disability. Representatives from Disability Services Queensland, Education Queensland, School Transition Officers, Local Area Coordinators, Allied Organisations, teachers and parents received multiple copies of the Handy Hints booklets in order to distribute to other families with sons and daughters with disability in high school and post school life. The Transition Sub-committee saw this event as only the beginning of our campaign. The next step is to lobby key government personnel in order to further the advocacy agenda.
